Switzerland, home to the tallest summit in Europe – Jungrau, will also be home to one of the world’s tallest 3D-printed structures.
Tor Alva, a 3D-printed tower developed by Swiss researchers, has been structured layer by layer using advanced concrete technology in the remote village of Mulegns, Switzerland.
“This technology enables non-standard, tailor-made elements to be manufactured efficiently. These types of forms would be nearly impossible to produce at this scale using conventional technologies,” said the website for Tor Alva.

Bringing a village back to life
Affectionately dubbed Weisser Turm, meaning White Tower, it’s not something for the love interest of a lady in distress to climb on to save her, but a testament to the innovation and cultural revival of a village that is losing its population.
Tor Alva rises majestically to a height of 100 feet (30 meters), marking an advancement in design and construction methodologies.
The tower will serve many purposes as it has been designed as a multifunctional space for art installations, music, and theater performances.
A tall, sustainable order
Tor Acomprisesp of different areas perfect for culture, like exhibitions. It has a spiraling long sequence of columns guiding visitors to a chamber stage on the topmost floor where concerts can be held.
Robotic concrete printing targets areas precisely, halving material use. The tower has been designed with disassembly and relocation in mind. Yes, it will be torn down or relocated to another dreamy location by 2029.
The tower has been designed to embody principles of circularity and reuse, paving the way for sustainable architectural practices in the future.
“Large parts of the tower will be built involving industry partners from the region. Thus, the tower brings valuable digital skills to the mountain regions and advances local trade,” said the website for Tor Alva.
The planning for the White Tower began in 2021 and was officially launched by Fundaziun Origen, a foundation in Mulegns, Switzerland.
A full-scale demonstration of the Tor Alva project was readied by 2022. The 3D printing is underway, with the tower officially opening up for tourists sometime this year.
3D printing has transitioned from a futuristic concept to a present-day reality, revolutionizing various sectors like manufacturing and healthcare.
A significant advancement in this realm is multi-material 3D printing, allowing the creation of objects using different materials in one process.
3D printing literally saves lives. Recently, engineers from the University of Colorado Boulder and Sandia National Laboratories unveiled a 3D-printed, AI-generated foam that can be used in bike helmet padding, making these helmets 25 percent safer.
This technique promises to be transformative across industries, reshaping engineering and product creation. It opens doors for innovative approaches and versatile applications, potentially changing how we design and manufacture goods.
